Question

What happens to chemical bonds in a chemical reaction?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In a chemical compound, the atoms are bonded together by a chemical bond which is formed by the mutual sharing of electrons.
  2. In a chemical reaction, the reactant molecules react with each other by gaining energy to form products.
  3. Due to the energy, the reactant bonds break down to form a new compound.
  4. The bonds that keep molecules together break apart and form new bonds during chemical reactions, rearranging atoms into different substances.
  5. Each bond takes a distinct amount of energy to either break or form; the reaction does not take place without this energy, and the reactants stay as they were.
  6. Example: Water Formation 2H2(g)+O2(g)2H2O(l)
  7. Here old bonds between hydrogen-hydrogen and oxygen-oxygen are broken and new hydrogen-oxygen bonds are formed.
