Chelating ligand:

Ligands which have more than two or three donor sites from which they form a coordination bond with the central metal and therefore, can form a ring-like structure. Thus, these ligands are called chelating ligands and the process is called chelation.

Examples:

EDTA (Ethylenediamine tetraacetate) ,hemoglobin, chlorophyll, Oxalic acid, etc.

Uses:

  1. Chelating ligands help in lowering the concentration of some metals in the blood by making complexes with them.
  2. Helps in identification of some specific ions in a solution containing many ions.
  3. They are used in industry in cleaning purpose by used in laundary.
