Question

What is a real life example of ideal gas law?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Ideal gas law helps in describing the behavior of an ideal as well as real gas when kept under normal temperature and pressure.
  2. This is prominently followed by ideal gases which are said to be ideal as they follow all the gas laws like Boyle's law, Charles' law, etc.
  3. Ideal gas relates the pressure, volume(V), temperature(T), and moles(n) of gas to each other.
  4. The ideal gas law equation can be given as: PV=nRT.
  5. The ideal gas law is best applied to monoatomic gases that are kept at high temperatures and low-pressure conditions.
  6. The ideal gas law finds its application in various day-to-day activities like in airplanes and vehicle airbags.
  7. In airplanes, there needs to be a proper balance of pressure inside the cabin and outside. Also, there has to be an adequate balance of CO2 and O2 in the plane for ventilation. The latter is also applicable to high-rise buildings that need ventilation. Ideal gas law helps in the deduction of pressure and temperature conditions.
  8. In-vehicle, airbags are deployed when there arises a sudden imbalance. The airbags get inflated due to the reaction of Sodium azide which produces Nitrogen gas that is filled in the airbag. And, the bursting of the airbag is prevented by the reaction of Sodium with Potassium nitrate.

10Na(s)+2KNO3(s)K2O(s)+5Na2O(s)+N2(g)PotassiumPotassiumSodiumnitrateoxideoxide

This reaction prevents the airbag from being overfilled and bursting.
