What is the strongest intermolecular force in 1-propanol?

Open in App
Solution

Intermolecular force:

  1. The attractive and repulsive forces between the molecules of a substance are known as the intermolecular forces of the substance.
  2. It is responsible for both the physical and chemical properties of the state of matters.
  3. There are primarily five types of intermolecular forces: dipole-dipole forces, ions-dipole forces, dipole-induced dipole forces, and dispersion forces.

Strongest 1-propanol intermoleculr force:

  1. The 1-propanol forms London interaction, diple-dipole interaction, and hydrogen bonding.
  2. The strongest intermolecular force in 1-propanol is hydrogen bonding due to the Hydrogen bonded to the Oxygen atom of the group.
  3. Oxygen has more electronegativity than the Hydrogen atom in which the Oxygen atom is a partial negative charge and Hydrogen is a partially positive charge.
  4. The Oxygen atom contains two lone pairs that form a strong electrostatic attraction with the Hydrogen atom from the OH group.
  5. The structure of 1-propanol is presented below:
