Question

What material is used in electromagnets?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A ferromagnetic substance such as steel, soft iron, or cobalt is laminated into the core of the electromagnets.
  2. A ferromagnetic unmagnetized piece's domains are randomly arranged to cancel out their magnetic moments.
  3. When this material is exposed to a magnetic field, all domains are oriented in the magnetic field's direction, resulting in a strong magnetic effect.
  4. A copper-coated coil is wounded around the core.
  5. To eliminate the heat created by electricity, electromagnets require a refrigeration system, which is usually water.

Hence, soft iron is used to make electromagnets.
