Question

When sound is produced in an aeroplane moving with the velocity of 200m/s horizontal, its echo is heard after 105s. If the velocity of sound in air is 300m/s, the elevation of the aircraft is,

  1. 250m

  2. 2505m

  3. 12.5m

  4. 2500m

Solution

The correct option is D

2500m

Step 1. Given Data:

The velocities are given. Horizontal velocity of the aeroplane, v1=200m/sandv2=300m/s

Where v2 is the velocity of sound in air. And their corresponding time t1=105sandt2=55s

Step 2. Formula used:

Using the equation of velocity as, distance=velocity×time

Step 3. Applying the formula:

The velocity v1 is horizontal and hence the distance traveled by it (D1) is horizontal only whereas v2 is the echo heard which depends on the velocity of sound in air and its distance trtraveleds D2.

The equation of velocity is distance=velocity×time

D1=v1t1=200×55=2236mD2=v2t2=300×55=3354m

When the distances are measured, they form a right-angled triangle with elevation height has one of its sides denoted by h.

D22=D12+h2h2=(3354)2-(2236)2h=2500m

Hence, the elevation of the airplane is 2500m.

Therefore, Option D is the correct answer.
