Occurrence of Lutetium:

  1. Lutetium has never been found as a pure metal in nature.
  2. Lutetium is found on earth in two isotope form: lutenium-175, lutenium-176.
  3. Lutetium is present in monazite about 0.003 percent and also occur in small amount in all minerals that contain yttrium.
  4. Due to its high cost, it has very less commercial uses.
  5. Lutetium in its stable form can be used as a catalyst in petroleum cracking in refineries.
  6. It is used in the process of Hydrogenation, polymerization and alkylation.
  7. It is useful in medical targeted therapies to treat tumours.
