Question

Which has more energy proton or electron?

Open in App
Solution

  1. If we consider that a electron and a proton are at rest kept in isolation, then the energy associated with their (rest) mass is given by Einstein's mass-energy equivalence formula.
  2. The equivalent energy of a particle at rest is given as E=mc2, where, E is the energy, m is the rest mass of the particle and c=3×108m/s is the speed of light in vacuum.
  3. The mass of a proton is about 1836 times the mass of an electron.

Hence, the energy of the proton will be greater.
