Question

Which bonds are the shortest?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The bond length is inversely proportional to bond strength i.e. higher the bond strength, shorter the bond length.
  2. Bond strength itself is proportional to bond order i.e. higher the bond multiplicity higher the bond strength.
  3. And so, the bond length is inversely proportional to bond order. i.e. higher the bond multiplicity, lower the bond length.
  4. In triple bond, bond order is 3, in double bond its 2 and in single bond its 1.
  5. Applying the above points, we get to know that the triple bonds are strongest and thus the shortest among single, double and triple bonds.
