Question

Which catalyst is used in Hydrogenation?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Hydrogenation is the process in which Hydrogen is treated with another chemical element or compound.
  2. In simple words, we can say that hydrogenation is the process of the addition of Hydrogen.
  3. Hydrogenation reduces the bonds present in the compounds such as double or triple bonds.
  4. At ordinary temperature Platinum and palladium is used as a catalyst while at 200°C Nickle is used.
  5. The two atoms of Hydrogen react with unsaturated molecules, changing to form saturated molecules.
  6. The chemical reaction is represented as:
    CH2=CH2g+H2g200°CCH3-CH3(g)EtheneHydrogenEthane
  7. Hence the catalyst used in the Hydrogenation process is Platinum, Palladium, and Nickel.
