Solution

  1. Plastic is a polymer of the long carbon chain. It is non-biodegradable due to which it is very hazardous to the environment.
  2. Alexander Parkes was a metallurgist and inventor from Birmingham, England created the world's first-ever Synthetic Plastic in 1862. He named the Plastic Parkesine.
  3. This discovery was the first step toward the development of man-made plastic.
  4. Later on, in 1868, John Wesley Hyatt from New York modified Parkesine into a compound named Celluloid.
  5. In 1907, the First fully synthetic Plastic was invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland named Bakelite.
  6. Bakelite was synthesized by the reaction of Formaldehyde and Phenol under heat and pressure.
  7. Bakelite can be quickly moulded and heat resistant. It has low electrical conductivity due to which it is also resistant to electric current.
  8. Bakelite is used in making handles for utensils and manufacturing electrical switches and electrical parts for machines because of its low electrical conductivity.
