Question

Why are Ethers less polar than Alcohols?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Ether is the organic solvent with general chemical formula are as follows:R-O-R,Ar-O-R,Ar-O-Ar, in which R is the alkyl group and Ar is the aryl group.
  2. Ethers possess a wide range of physical and chemical properties.
  3. They are similar in structure compared to water and alcohol.
  4. Due to the polarity of C-O bonds ethers have a net dipole moment.
  5. Therefore, this physical property denotes the considerable dipole moment.
  6. In the case of alcohols, they have only one polarC-O bond and so they are more polar in nature.
