Why are free electrons named so?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A chemical element consists of different atoms, and they are the smallest unit of particles.
  2. The size of atoms is much smaller as they cannot be seen through naked eyes.
  3. An atom is consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
  4. The electrons are present outside the nucleus in the orbit in which they are held by a strong electrostatic force of attraction.
  5. Electrons move around the nucleus and all the electrons are not bound to the nucleus.
  6. The electrons are not bound to the nucleus, so if energy is applied, they will come out easily.
  7. These electrons which are not bound to the nucleus are called free electrons.
  8. So they are named free electrons because they are not bound to the nucleus, and do not possess a strong electrostatic force of attraction.
