Question

Why do bond angles change?

Open in App
Solution

Bond angle: It is defined as the "angle between the orbitals containing bonding electron pairs around the central atom in a molecule or in a complex ion".

Effect of lone pair on the bond angle:

  • A bond angle decrease when a lone pair of electrons at the central atom starts to repel the bonded pair of electrons so, the bonds are displaced slightly inside.
  • A bond angle increase when there is an increase in the back bonding bond angle increases.
