Question

Why do proton and electron have same charge?

Open in App
Solution

Protons and electrons:

  1. Proton is a stable subatomic particle which is present in the nucleus of every atom.
  2. Electron is a negatively charged subatomic particle which can be free or bound to the nucleus of an atom.

Protons and electrons have same charge because:

  1. Protons have the potential to decay to a positron.
  2. The charges of the proton and the positron are very close to each other.
  3. The charge on the proton and the electron are of the same size, but have the opposite electric charge.
  4. The same number of protons and electrons cancels one another in a neutral atom.
