Why does temperature decrease with pressure?

  1. When gas is kept in a vessel, the gaseous particles keep colliding with each other as well as on the walls of the containing vessel.
  2. Due to this pressure gets exerted on the walls of the containing vessel.
  3. According to the kinetic theory of gases, the relationship between the kinetic energy of the molecules of a gas and the absolute temperature is proportional.
  4. When the temperature of the gas decreases, as a result, the kinetic energy of the gas molecules also decreases.
  5. Due to this, the gas molecules now move slowly.
  6. So, the collision between molecules and the collision of molecules with the walls of the container is less frequent.
  7. Hence, temperature decreases with a decrease in pressure.
