Question

Why is gravity a force?

Open in App
Solution

Gravity: Gravity is the force that pulls items toward the center of a planet or other entity.

Force: A force is an external agent capable of altering a body's condition of rest or motion.

  1. Because it works between any two masses anywhere in the universe, gravity is called a universal force.
  2. The Sun and the Moon, for example, have a gravitational attraction.
  3. The solar system was formed by the gravitational attraction of dust and gas particles in space.
  4. If m1 and m2 are the masses of two bodies, r is the distance between them and G is the universal gravitation constant, then gravitational force is given as F=Gm1m2r2.
  5. From this equation, we can see that gravitational force is directly proportional to the mass of the bodies and inversely proportional to the distance between them.

Thus, gravity is a force.
