Question

Why is it called a rectangular hyperbola?

Open in App
Solution

Rectangular Hyperbola:

  • A rectangular hyperbola has its asymptotes or axes perpendicular to each other.
  • The length of the transverse axis is equal to the length of the conjugate axis.
  • The general form of a regular hyperbola is x2a2-y2b2=1. For a rectangular hyperbola, the value of a=b.
  • The general equation of a rectangular hyperbola is x2-y2=a2orx2-y2=b2

Since the asymptotes of a rectangular hyperbola are perpendicular to each other, that's why it is known as a rectangular hyperbola.
