Why is natural frequency important?

Natural Frequency: -

  1. The system's natural frequency is the frequency at which it will typically oscillate in the absence of any external driving force.
  2. Knowing a thing's natural frequency is crucial because when it vibrates at a frequency that is equal to that of the object, the vibration of the amplitude increases dramatically and may cause irreparable harm.

Applications of Natural Frequency: -

Child Swinging : -

  1. When pushed and then left alone, a youngster in a swing will first rock back and forth a predetermined number of times in a predetermined amount of time. The swing is now moving with its normal frequency.
  2. The infant must be pushed at precisely the proper moment to maintain them swinging freely. For the swing to experience resonance or produce the optimal reaction, these "correct times" need to match the swing's inherent frequency. With each push, the swing gains a little more energy.

Bridge Falling:-

  1. It is not always safe to apply a forced frequency that is equal to the natural frequency.
  2. Bridges and other mechanical constructions are susceptible to this. A bridge with inadequate structural integrity may violently swing when subjected to oscillations at a frequency equal to its natural frequency. As the system builds up energy, the swaying grows greater.
  3. Such "resonance disasters" have been observed on a number of occasions.
