Question

Why is the Median Important?

Open in App
Solution

Median:

  • Median is a measure of central tendency for a given set of data.
  • It is the middle value of a set of data arranged in ascending or descending order.
  • It divides the data into two halves namely the lower quartile and upper quartile.
  • The Median is not affected by the skewness of the data as it considers only one or two values of the data and it is not affected by the extreme outliers.
  • If the number of elements is odd, the central element is the median of the data.
  • If the number of elements is even, the mean of the two central values is taken as the median of the data.
  • If the mean and median of the data set are the same, the data is distributed evenly.

The importance of the median value is that it provides the idea about the distribution of the data. If the mean and the median of the data set are the same, then the dataset is evenly distributed from the smallest to the highest values

Hence, the median is important to calculate the data easily.
