Open in App
Solution

Extraction: The process of churning out metal from its ore, is called extraction. An extraction requires a reduction of metal oxides in the process.

Reduction: Loss of oxygen or decreases in oxidation state is termed reduction.

  • Metal extraction is a reduction process because when in the process of churning out metal from its ore, the ore is converted into oxide, to which further reduction is needed.

For example, Carbon or Carbon monoxide is used to reduce Iron oxide.Fe2O3(s)+CO(g)2Fe(s)+2CO2(g)
