Question

Why photoelectric effect cannot be explained on the basis of the wave nature of light?

Open in App
Solution

Photoelectric effect:

  1. It is the emission of electrons from the surface of a material when electromagnetic radiation, such as light is incident on a material.

Explanation:

Wave nature of light does not explain about following concepts of the photoelectric effect because:

  1. Immediate ejection of electrons from the metal surface.
  2. Existence of threshold frequency for the metal surface.
  3. Kinetic energy of photoelectrons is independent of the intensity of the incident light and depends on the frequency of the incident light.

Hence, the photoelectric effect cannot be explained by the wave nature of light.
