ABO blood group is an example of?

Open in App
Solution

Blood grouping systems

  1. Blood groups are categorized based on their antigens into more than 33 different types.
  2. ABO, MNS, Lewis, Kell, Duffy, etc., are a few blood grouping systems.
  3. Karl Landsteiner gave the ABO blood grouping.
  4. The antigens produced and the phenotype is summarized in the table below-
Blood group type (Phenotype)GenotypeAntigen present
AIAIA, IAIOA antigen
BIBIB, IBIOB antigen
ABIAIBA and B antigens
OIOIONone

Multiple alleles

  1. ABO blood grouping system is an example of multiple alleles and does not follow the Mendelian laws of inheritance.
  2. The presence of more than one form of a gene for a particular trait is called multiple alleles.
  3. Each allele produces a different expression in each individual of a particular species or population.
  4. In the above table, different possible genotypes and their phenotypes have been summarised.
  5. These alleles are co-dominant. It means each allele present in the genotype is responsible for producing a combined phenotypic effect.
