Question

Are all C4 plants monocots?

Open in App
Solution

C4 plants:

  1. Plants that mainly grow in tropical dry areas undergo the C4 pathway. In C4 plants, the first product of CO2 fixation is oxaloacetic acid.
  2. C4 plants possess a distinct type of leaf anatomy called ‘Kranz’ anatomy in which the mesophyll cells form a cluster around the bundle-sheath.
  3. C4 plants show a high photosynthesis rate at high temperatures, efficiently utilize nitrogen and water, lack photorespiration, etc.
  4. Monocots refer to plants that contain a single cotyledon.
  5. All C4 plants are not monocots. C4 pathway occurs in both monocots (maize, sorghum) and dicots (Asteraceae, Amaranthus).
