Question

Are all flowers symmetrical?

Open in App
Solution

Flower symmetry:

  1. A flower is a modified shoot. It is the reproductive part of a plant.
  2. All flowers are not symmetrical. Flower symmetry can be grouped into three categories- radial symmetry (actinomorphic), bilateral symmetry (zygomorphic), and asymmetry.
  3. In radial symmetry, the flower can be divided into two equal parts in any radial plane. Examples: datura, hibiscus, rose, etc.
  4. In bilateral symmetry, the flower can be divided into two equal halves in one vertical plane. Examples: pea, lentil, Gulmohar, etc.
  5. Few flowers don’t exhibit any kind of symmetry, they are called asymmetric. For example, Canna.
