Question

Are centrioles found in prokaryotic cells?

Open in App
Solution

Centrioles:-

  1. They are barrel-shaped organelles found near the nuclear envelope in the cytoplasm of animal cells.
  2. They are small-shaped microtubules that have an average length of 500mm and a diameter of 200mm.
  3. They are mostly made up of a protein called tubulin.
  4. They help in the formation of spindle fibres during cell division.
  5. They assist in the organization of microtubules, which act as the skeletal structure of the cell.
  6. They aid in determining the nucleus' and other organelles' positions within the cell.
  7. They are found in most eukaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic cell:

  1. In a prokaryotic cell, genetic material flows freely in the cytoplasm.
  2. So there is no need for centriole during cell division.
  3. Hence prokaryotic cell doesn't have centriole.
