Diatoms:

  1. Diatoms are the photosynthetic algae that thrive in fresh and marine water as well.
  2. These organisms are classified under the kingdom Protists.
  3. Their cell walls form the two thin overlapping shells as in a soapbox and the cover fits together.
  4. Their walls are made up of silica. They have silica shells.

Importance of diatoms:

  1. Fossilization of diatoms results in the formation of 'diatomaceous earth' that can be used widely for commercial purposes.
  2. It is used for polishing, insulation, filtration, abrasives, varnishes, paints, dynamite base, etc.
  3. They fix around 20% of carbon globally thus controlling various climatic factors.
  4. Since they are the primary producers in an aquatic environment, they contribute around 40% of productivity.
