Question

Are enzymes always active?

Open in App
Solution

Enzymes:

  1. Enzymes are mostly proteins that catalyze various biochemical reactions.
  2. The catalytic reaction occurs through a specific region of the enzyme where the substrate bind. This region is called the ‘active site’.
  3. Enzymes are not always active. There are several factors that influence enzyme activity.
  4. Enzymes in the body are stored and secreted in their inactive form. This prevents the internal organs from the action of enzymes.
  5. Example: pepsinogen, an inactive precursor of the pepsin enzyme, gets activated in the acidic pH of the stomach.
