Question

Are GTP and ATP the same?

Open in App
Solution

GTP

Guanosine triphosphate (GTP) contains guanine as a nitrogenous base, ribose sugar, and three phosphate groups.

ATP

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) possesses adenine as a nitrogenous base, ribose sugar, and three phosphate groups.

Differences

  1. GTP and ATP are not the same. They have different nitrogenous bases and their functions also differ.
  2. GTP plays a vital role in signalling pathways. On the other hand, ATP is used for several cellular functions such as the synthesis of nucleic acids, activation of amino acids during translation, and transportation of macromolecules across the cell membrane.
