Question

Are introns non-coding?

Open in App
Solution

Coding sequences

  1. The sequences in the DNA or RNA that are used in protein synthesis are called coding sequences.
  2. They are also called exons which are present in a mature RNA transcript.
  3. These highly conserved sequences are found both in eukaryotes and prokaryotes.

Non-coding sequences

  1. Those sequences present in DNA or RNA that are not used in protein synthesis are called non-coding sequences.
  2. They are also called introns and are usually spliced and removed from a mature RNA transcript.
  3. These sequences are not conserved and are found in eukaryotes only.
  4. Intron sequences are transcribed into RNA but are later removed through splicing.
