Are isolated metabolic reactions living things?

Open in App
Solution

Metabolic Reactions:

  1. Metabolic reactions or metabolism are the chemical reactions that take place inside the cell that generates energy.
  2. These energy-producing reactions are performed by each and every cell for maintenance and survival.
  3. Breakdown of glucose (Glycolysis) is an example of a metabolic reaction.

Isolated metabolic reactions:

  1. Isolated metabolisms take place outside the cell in a synthetic medium (in-vitro) in a cell-free system.
  2. These reactions are a characteristic of living cells but are not living things themselves. They can be considered living reactions.
  3. Each and every living cell in the world undergo metabolism to survive and grow.
  4. For example the chemical breakdown of glucose or Glycolysis can be done in a cell-free enivronment.
