Question

Are mesosomes present in both prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells?

Open in App
Solution

Mesosomes:

  1. Infoldings of the cell membrane in prokaryotic cells.
  2. They are considered analogous to mitochondrial cristae of eukaryotic cells.
  3. Mesosomes help in the synthesis of the cell membrane, protein synthesis, replication of DNA, and equal distribution of chromosomes during cytokinesis.

Prokaryotes:

  1. Single-celled organisms which lack a proper nucleus and other organelles.
  2. Examples- bacteria, archaea, and cyanobacteria.
  3. Mesosomes are present only in prokaryotic cells. Eukaryotes lack mesosomes.
