  1. They are large, complex biological molecules composed of basic units called amino acids.
  2. They are involved in the most basic & important aspects of life, for example- metabolism, movement, defense, cellular communication, and molecular recognition.
  3. Proteins are very hard to digest (as compared to other nutrients).
  4. This is mainly because of their long, complexly folded chains.
  5. Proteins are digested in our body by the action of enzymes like pepsin and various proteases.
