Question

Are restriction enzymes exonucleases?

Open in App
Solution

Restriction enzymes

  1. Restriction enzymes are the proteins that are isolated from the bacteria.
  2. The role is to cleave the DNA sequences at the specific sequence sites.
  3. After the cleavage, they produce DNA fragments with a known sequence at each end.
  4. These enzymes are used in the laboratory in recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering.
  5. The enzymes that cleave the DNA on the outer side are exonucleases and those that cleave in the middle of the DNA are endonucleases.
  6. Restriction enzymes cut the DNA in between at specific sites.
  7. Example- EcoRI (Escherichia coli), BamHI (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), HindIII (Haemophilus influenza), etc.
