Question

At what pH and temperature, the enzymes are highly efficient?

Solution

Enzymes

  1. Enzymes are mostly proteins that catalyze various biochemical reactions.
  2. The catalytic reaction occurs through a specific region (active site) where the substrate bind.
  3. Enzymes show the highest activity at a specific temperature (optimum temperature) and pH (optimum pH).

Optimum temperature

  1. The optimum temperature varies for different enzymes.
  2. However, the majority of the enzymes are highly efficient between 30°C-45°C.
  3. Most of the enzymes in the human body are efficient at 37°C. They denature above 40°C.

Optimum pH

  1. Many enzymes of higher organisms are highly efficient around pH 6-8.
  2. Although there are many exceptions.
  3. Some enzymes such as pepsin show efficiency at pH 1.5-2, whereas, alkaline phosphatase is most efficient at pH 8.5-9.5.
