Question

Can DNA be extracted from a cell?

Open in App
Solution

DNA:

  1. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a helically twisted double chain macromolecule.
  2. It is made of deoxyribose sugar, phosphate groups, and nucleotides.
  3. It constitutes the genetic material of all organisms with the exception of ribovirus (it contains RNA).

DNA extraction from cell:

  1. DNA extraction is a process of purifying DNA by using physical or chemical methods from cell membranes, proteins, or other cellular structures like the nucleus.
  2. DNA extraction can be done routinely in the laboratory to isolate DNA from the nucleus of cells.
  3. DNA extraction methods involve 3 basic steps- lysis, precipitation, and purification.
  4. In lysis, DNA is released by breaking the nucleus. Later, enzymes and detergents are used to dissolve cellular DNA and purify it to get free DNA.
  5. Readymade DNA extraction kits are also available in the markets. So, these kits also help extract DNA from particular cells.
