Pancreas

  1. The pancreas is an organ located in the abdomen that plays a major role in digestion and regulating blood sugar levels.
  2. It comprises two parts, one endocrine part and one exocrine gland.
  3. The endocrine glands have clusters of cells islets of Langerhans which is made of three types of cell.
  4. the alpha cells secrete glucagon, beta cells secrete insulin and the delta cells are responsible to secrete the hormone somatostatin.
  5. The exocrine glands have acinar and duct tissues that secrete digestive enzymes like lipase, trypsin etc.
  6. The whole pancreas (pancreatectomy) or a part of the pancreatic tissue can be removed surgically.
  7. This can happen if the pancreas had suffered severe damage through cancer or physical trauma.
  8. The removal of the pancreas would lead a person to survive on insulin shots due to the absence of insulin and enzymatic pills for digestion.
