Brain:

  1. It is a master organ for control and communication within the body and surroundings.
  2. Its three main parts are the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
  3. The hindbrain can be distinguished into Cerebellum, Medulla Oblongata, and Pons Varolii.

Medulla Oblongata:

  1. It connects the spinal cord, pons, and cerebral cortex.
  2. Location- the lowest section of the hindbrain. It is anterior to the cerebellum in the brain stem, inferior to the pons.
  3. It plays a vital role in regulating the autonomic functions like breathing, heartbeat, digestion, etc.
  4. It also assists in governing our reflexes and maintaining body posture.
  5. It is considered the “spinal cord of the head” because of its importance in controlling head and facial musculature.

Hypothalamus:

  1. It is a small region (approx. almond size) present at the center of the human brain, in proximity to the pituitary gland.
  2. It has three central regions- anterior, middle, and posterior regions.
  3. It plays a pivotal role in hormone production.

Main functions of the hypothalamus:

  1. It maintains the internal balance of the body (homeostasis)- body temperature, body weight, heart rate, blood pressure, etc.
  2. The hypothalamus connects the nervous system and the endocrine system.
  3. It is also involved in essential functions like- sleep cycles, emotions, childbirth, etc.
  4. Hormones released by the hypothalamus- Oxytocin, somatostatin, Gonadotropin-releasing hormone, etc.
  5. Despite being primitive regions of the brain, the hypothalamus and medulla oblongata work independently of each other.
