Question

Do Prions have genetic material?

Open in App
Solution

Prions

  1. Prions are the infectious agents responsible for several neurodegenerative diseases in mammals, like, Creutzfeldt Jakob disease.
  2. They do not contain any genetic components like DNA or RNA.
  3. Because prion proteins are essentially proteins without any genetic material, their mode of action is completely different from that of bacteria and viruses.
  4. They cause disease in both animals and humans by forcing normally healthy proteins in the brain to fold abnormally.
