Question

Does cellular respiration generate ATP?

Open in App
Solution

Cellular respiration:

  1. Cellular respiration is the process of oxidization of food or glucose molecules releasing energy.
  2. It involves the following steps- glycolysis, oxidation of pyruvate, citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.
  3. During glycolysis, one glucose molecule is broken down into two pyruvate molecules with the release of 2 ATPs.
  4. Later, pyruvate is converted to acetyl CoA which enters the citric acid cycle. Around 36 ATP molecules are generated.
