Question

Is there a haplontic life cycle In Marchantia?

Open in App
Solution

Haplontic life cycle:

  1. Here both haploid and diploid stages are multicellular.
  2. In some, the gametophyte is dominant and free-living and the sporophyte is a small and short-lived phase, which is dependent on gametophytes, e.g. Bryophytes.
  3. A haplontic life cycle occurs when the zygote takes the lead, implying that zygotes are the only diploid cells.
  4. In order to produce a new plant, it splits itself mitotically.
  5. A diploid sporophyte and a haploid gametophyte alternate generations in the haplodiplontic life cycle.
  6. Marchantia does not show the haplontic life cycle, instead, it shows a haplodiplontic life cycle.
