Question

Does phosphorylation occur in glycolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Phosphorylation:

  1. It is a biological procedure in which phosphate is added to an organic molecule.
  2. Substrate level phosphorylation occurs during glycolysis.
  3. The first step, also known as the preliminary phase, is where the enzyme Hexokinase causes the conversion from fructose-1-phosphate to fructose-1, 6-bisphosphate.
  4. The two ATP molecules that were utilized are created or returned to the system in the following stage, which is also known as the payout phase. Additionally, this occurs in two stages:
  5. One ATP molecule is released during the conversion of 1,6-bisphosphoglycerate to 6-phosphoglycerate, and phosphoenolpyruvate is changed to pyruvate in the very final stage.
  6. Substrate-level phosphorylation is the process by which phosphate is transferred from an organic component to ADP to produce ATP.
