Does Progesterone help with implantation?

Open in App
Solution

Progesterone:

Progesterone is a female reproductive hormone that is often referred to as the pregnancy hormone because it helps with implantation and pregnancy.

Implantation:

  1. Implantation occurs when a fertilized egg cell attaches to the uterine wall.
  2. Fertilized cell transforms from a single cell into a group of cells and is then implanted into the uterine lining.
  3. Implantation typically occurs eight to nine days after ovulation.

Role of progesterone in implantation:

  1. Corpus luteum is a mass of cells that arises in an ovary and is important for the synthesis of the hormone progesterone during early pregnancy.
  2. As a result of the effects of progesterone, the endothelium lining of the endometrium multiplies during the second phase of the menstrual cycle, thickening the uterine wall as the surface area and thickness of the endometrium increase thereby increasing the chances of implantation.
  3. Progesterone is also needed to keep the endometrium healthy during the implantation process.
