Co-extinction:

  1. Extinction is defined as the process of evolution which results in the extinction of a population or species.
  2. The extinction of a plant or animal species occurs simultaneously with the extinction of other species on which it depends.
  3. Co-extinction occurs when a plant or animal is forced to associate with another.
  4. The loss or decline of closely related species is referred to as co-extinction.

Example:

  1. One example is the mutualistic link between plants and pollinators, in which the extinction of one will eventually lead to the extinction of the other.
  2. Co-extinction is another factor that contributes to biodiversity loss.

Plant-Pollinator Relationship:

  1. In a plant-pollinator relationship, the pollinator benefits by feeding on the food rewards provided by the flower, primarily nectar and pollen.
  2. In turn, the plant benefits as the pollinator move from flower to flower, transferring pollen as it forages for food rewards.
  3. This movement of pollen allows the plant to reproduce and exchange genetic information with other plants.
  4. Most flowering plants require relationships with pollinators to reproduce.
  5. Pollinators (plants suited to pollination) are flowering perennials, annuals, or shrubs that provide the nectar and pollen needed for a rich pollinator population.
  6. Pollinators include hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.
