Question

Give an example of human homeostatic mechanisms.

Open in App
Solution

Homeostasis:

  1. The ability or inclination of an organism to govern and maintain a consistent or similar internal environment is known as homeostasis.
  2. Such creatures are able to govern and regulate their internal environment, keeping it steady.
  3. Humans, mammals in general, and other homeostatic organisms are examples.
  4. They're also known as warm-blooded organisms because they can keep their body temperature constant.
  5. Homeostatic mechanisms originated to keep a regulated variable in the internal environment within a range of values favorable to life.
  6. It is the tendency of biological systems to maintain a relatively stable state in the internal environment, while constantly interacting and adjusting to changes within or outside the system.

Example of homeostasis in Human beings:

  1. An example of homeostasis in the human being is body temperature control.
  2. The temperature regulation in the body is regulated by the hypothalamus.
  3. Body temperature feedback is carried through the nervous system to the brain and adjusts the breathing rate.
  4. When someone is healthy, their body maintains a temperature close to 98.6°F(37°C).
  5. Being warm-blooded creatures, humans can raise or lower the temperature internally to keep the temperature at the desired level.
  6. Whether lying in the summer sun or playing in the winter snow, body temperature changes only a degree or two.
  7. When we shiver in the cold, or sweat in the summer, this body is trying to maintain homeostasis.
