How are fossils formed?

Solution

Fossils:

  1. Fossils are ancient species' preserved remnants or signs of remains.
  2. A fossil can either preserve a whole organism or only a portion of one.
  3. Fossils can be made from bones, shells, feathers, leaves, etc.

Formation of Fossils:

  1. After death, the soft parts of an animal's body degrade, leaving the hard parts such as the bones behind.
  2. This was buried by sediment which is made up of microscopic rock fragments.
  3. As new layers of sediment are placed on top of the skeleton, the sediment begins to solidify and convert to rock.
  4. So it can be concluded that the fossils are generated when sediments build up on top of an animal, which subsequently compacts and turns it into rock.
