Solution

Neurons:

  1. Neurons are fundamental units of the brain and nervous system.
  2. These cells receive sensory input from the outside world.

Based on their electrophysiological traits, neurons can be classified as follows:

  1. Burst or phasic - neurons that fire in bursts are phasic.
  2. Tonic or regular spiking - some neurons are usually constantly active, e.g. the interneuron in the neurostriatum.
  3. Thin-spike - Compared to others, the action potentials of some neurons are narrower, e.g. interneurons in the prefrontal cortex.
  4. Fast Spiking - Some neurons are remarked for their fast firing rate,e.g. cells in the globus pallidus, and some types of cortical inhibitory interneurons.
