Absorption of water and minerals by plants:

  1. Plants absorb water and minerals from the soil via their roots.
  2. The root hairs on roots increase the surface area of roots to facilitate absorption of water and minerals that are dissolved in the soil water.
  3. The xylem then conducts the absorbed water and minerals from the roots to the shoot system.
  4. Thus, a continuous passage of path for nutrients is formed to ultimately reach the leaves from the roots as shown below:
