Question

How can we reduce habitat loss?

Open in App
Solution

Habitat loss:

  1. Natural habitats are lost when they are converted to human uses, such as cropland, urban areas, and infrastructure development such as roads and dams.
  2. The expansion of a few primates out of 620 primate species in tropical rainforests is an example of habitat loss.
  3. Tropical rainforests now cover 6% of the earth's land surface, down from 14% previously, and are being destroyed at an alarming rate.

We can conserve habitat loss:

Ex-situ and in-situ conservation are the two approaches to reducing habitat loss.

Ex-situ:

Ex-situ conservation refers to the protection of an endangered species outside of its natural habitat under human care.

In-situ:

  1. The conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of a plant or animal species, such as forest genetic resources in natural populations of species, is known as in-situ conservation.
  2. It is the process of defending an endangered plant or animal species in its natural habitat, either by protecting or cleaning up the habitat or defending the species against predators.
