Question

How do humans affect transpiration?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. Loss of water in the form of vapors from the aerial parts of the plant including stems, and leaves, specifically through the stomata is referred to as transpiration.
  2. Transpiration is a very useful process as it helps to cool down the surface of the plant in extremely hot climates.
  3. A force of pull acts in the xylem tissues that help in the movement of water in the upward direction.
  4. This force of pull is referred to as transpirational pull.

Effect of human actions on the process of transpiration:

  1. Humans are abruptly decreasing the land area under the forests by deforestation and converting them into agricultural lands.
  2. This conversion has a very detrimental effect on the process of transpiration.
  3. Due to the decreased vegetation cover, soil erosion is increasing rapidly as transpiration is decreasing.
  4. The decreased transpiration and increased soil erosion lead the rainwater to run off.
  5. This whole process is creating a build-up of silt in the water bodies.
